It's not the left Starmer/Labour should seek to unite; that has its own populism challenges. To hold power he has to appeal to the mostly liberal centre. These are the people who elected him the first time around; people who tend to be pro-EU, think business can be, should be and often is a force for good, are against racism, broadly pro-immigration (or if not pro understand why the UK's age demographics need it) - and against authoritarianism.
Totally agree that the government's Representation of the People Bill needs to go much further in preventing undue influence in our political system. In local elections in Kent last year, some voters ( myself included) were targeted with not one but three Vote Reform posted letters from Nigel and one candidate leaflet. This is clearly beyond the limited candidate spend. Electoral Commission said, no breach of campaign rules occurred because the candidate name was not included in the letter. Funding for election campaigns must be tackled by the new Bill
Unless Starmer wakes up and realises how many lifelong Labour voters are deserting in despair, either to the Green Party or to the LibDems (probably depending on tactical votes), both he and Badenoch will be yesterday's people long before the next election.
If he's too squeamish to talk to the Greens, he needs to get talking to Ed Davey quickly. It's not just the old Labour left who have had enough, it's anyone vaguely left of centre. Mahmood's policies are positively Thatcherite.
An interesting and informative article. I find it frightening to think there are groups with such extreme ideas and politics. I sincerely hope that Keir Starmer will see and grasp the opportunity to move more decisively,and sooner,to show what the far right is capable of. Unfortunately I think he is too afraid of the left wing of the Labour Party to take any bold moves.
Calling people far right, nazi, even ethno-nationalist etc no longer has the power the left thinks it does. When mass migration has reached a point where the govt is actively jailing people for not wanting child rape, the sexual assault of women and the massive increase in violent assault, theft etc. Alarm bells should be ringing, but it seems that the socialists are not only cheering this on but are advocating for more of the same as well as spending at unprecedented levels.
It's NOT wrong to want undesirables removed from your country, nor it is racist to want control of your own country either.
For those of you about to call ME racist, take a moment to think about Pakistan. If you are not of Pakistani descent you CANNOT run in govt, getting a passport is not enough. If you have a criminal record you CANNOT become a citizen, if you commit a crime while NOT being a citizen, you WILL be DEPORTED.
So wanting the UK to have the same standards as Pakistan makes ME racist, what does those same standards make THEM?
Ask ANYONE in THEIR own country: Who do you want your country filled with? Over 90% of EVERY citizen in EVERY country will say their own people.
