We need to remember that it is a Labour Government that proposes this and in doing so they are acting in Bad faith to all those who are members and voters in the last, and past, elections.

I did not vote at the last election as I feared the way Kier would go on attaining power, so my anxieties were proved correct, weren't they?

I voted for an independent candidate in 2024 after being a lifelong Labour supporter and Socialist. I knew that because the snake charmer was taking money from the far right, the same people backing the Tories, he would shift the balance of power not one jot.

It is so important that 'ordinary' people are aware of and involved with the legal system. Juries help that. To remove them will make law courts more a 'club' for those 'in the know'. The justice system must remain accountable to the wider society.

Some excellent and thought-provoking points.

Fairness and equality are the first casualties when wealth and greed are allowed to prosper.

I hadn't really considered the inheritance of laws implemented in good faith and then the potential abuse by 'bad actors', as I believe you call them, in later years.

It is appalling that the right to trial by jury is being whittled away, on the pretext of shortening trial waiting times,

Thank you!

We all know that the European Convention on Human Rights will be the first casualty under Garbage. This guarantees the right to trial by jury which Lammy is seeking to do away with under the guise of reforming the courts. Garbage will sack every judge who refuses to bend to his will (just as his mentor Shitler has done in the USA). This is a step too far and will be abused sooner rather than later unless FPTP is removed to elect minority governments with massive majorities in the Commons.

“Society grows great,” the old proverb says, “when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” In political reality, the opposite is too often true. Governments hand down structures and policies with little thought for who might inherit them - or what authoritarian ends those tools might eventually serve. The seeds being planted now risk casting much darker shadows

When I heard and read this about taking away a Jury for some cases I was totally against. The Jury are normal people and are living normal lives and tend to be able to see through lies. Judges are in more of a privileged system and tend to be more about themselves and also pleasing the powers that be. I've read enough true articles now to know that the judicial system is flawed greatly.

Two Party politics have put us on this path. We must fight for Proportional Representation NOW! As an 80 year old I have always voted. Born in the 6th safest Conservative seat I started early with Screaming Lord Sutch! 'Green' by the standards of Caroline Lucas I have never given up hoping. Forced to vote LibDem to keep out a Tory we must have change. Time for a REVOLUTION...........

Losing our safeguard, being judged by our piers is so important. I very much doubt that a single, white, middle-class, well-heeled, shielded from the raw edge of every day life judge IS in a position to come to a considered opinion about so many problem arising out of our society.

The Minister's reasoning is seriously flawed. If you want to unblock the backlog DONT stuff it full of non-terrorist protestors who merely want to hold up a placard. Placard holders that our very biased (Jewish family) PM SHOULD have distanced himself from.

Then there is the availability of Courts which again the government deem are not available, because it will cost money to open them. This is how cheap our basic right to a FAIR trial has become.

So, how do we lend support to defeating this move? Answer?

Liked, restacked & shared to Bluesky (as always). I wonder if David Lammy truly understands what his proposal means in the light of British history? Perhaps he should read the Magna Carta, which for all its failings, has been so influential through the ages.

So, how can we, the caring and sensible people(?) avert this disaster?

I don't quite understand the point you're making here, I'm afraid: "But perhaps the gravest concern is this: authoritarian regimes often begin by centralising legal interpretation." Quite so, but juries are the judges of fact, not law -- the trial judge interprets the law, subject to appeals to the superior courts either side thinks the judge got it wrong.

The proposals are wrong for all sorts of reasons, but I don't see how they affect legal interpretation one way or the other.

An excellently concise outline of the future problems imposed by these kinds of political decisions. We must remember that the legislation passed to deal with the so-called Covid-19 pandemic, justify all kinds of heinous possibilities for future governments - not least mandatory vaccination/medication.

Nobody is even suggesting mandatory vaccination, in fact it’s hard to even get a free vax against Covid this year.
