The right wing is getting itself in a tizzy about a bill that will let you use a valid bank card to help prove your identity when voting. Burnham’s axing Photo ID, they say. (Spoiler: He isn’t.)
I am one of those people who doesn’t have photo identification. I am severely sight impaired and I really don’t want to leave the country so I won’t pay for a passport and despite advice given to me by a job centre employee that I get a provisional driving licence I can’t get one! All photo identification has to be paid for which I understand, but there are so many different types available I honestly don’t know which one would be accepted.
I welcome the new rule of bank cards being accepted as valid forms of identification. I hope they will be accepted by the government when I’m trying to sort out my benefits!
What a great comment to leave, Zoe - thank you so much. Your story sums the whole issue up perfectly. Why should good honest people like you be severely inconvenienced by a process put in place to solve a problem that doesn't really exist? I'm glad this change will make it easier for you to exercise your democratic right to vote (after all, what's the point of having a right to do something if you can't exercise it?). I'm afraid I don't know anything about ID for benefit claims but I hope you get what you need in thats space. Thanks again for your comment. M
