Even if all this was sparked by long-ago Thatcher, the lurch of rapid change in our politics towards overt populist authoritarianism feels surreal. Intellectually one can see the real and present danger of Farage’s rise; but ‘belief’ takes a while to catch up. In me, at least. That’s probably a sort of denial.
